The People's Budget
your voice, your choice
It's expensive out here
My idea is similar to a minimum basic income program but it would provide grants to folks or unrestricted funds (application based and easily accessible) just for folks to survive. It should be enough for rent, a car down payment, or a house down payment but could be as small as lunch or gas money. These funds should be for folks in WA and the number of folks based on the median population by city. We would all benefit, especially folks with minimum income.
This proposal has been rejected because:
Type of funding: Programs and services (non-capital)
Rough cost estimate: Over $7.2 million
Evaluation notes:
❌ This idea could not be implemented without changing current policy or law.
❌ This City doesn't have jurisdiction to do this idea.
✅ This idea doesn't name a specific vendor.
❌ This idea would incur costs indefinitely.
Justification: The City may not have jurisdiction to implement the proposal. In addition, the cost of the pilot would exceed budget, unless a targeted number is identified of individuals/communities to serve. If a pilot is implemented, it would inform future planning for revenue structure and budget appropriations.
Other notes: OED has not done this type of programming/grants, one of our many goals is supporting small businesses, business districts, community wealth building, key industries and workforce development by, prioritizing BIPOC business owners/commmunities, to access capital, improve business districts, and resources. The only iteration of this type of programming of funds was done by Office of Immigrant and Refugees Affair (OIRA) and Human Services Dept (HSD) with the Seattle Relief Funds due to the impacts of COVID-19 with federal recovery funds.
Thank you for sharing your idea. This idea and its evaluation have been forwarded to the budget delegates. They will use this information to group together similar ideas, narrow down options based on community needs, and develop fully detailed proposals for you and your community to vote on in October 2023.
