FREE Childcare
Free childcare - everybody - City of Seattle
This proposal is being evaluated
Type of funding: Programs and services (non-capital)
Rough cost estimate: Over $7.2 million
Evaluation notes:
✅ This idea could be implemented without changing current policy or law.
✅ This idea is within the City's jurisdiction.
✅ This idea doesn't name a specific vendor.
❌ This idea would incur costs indefinitely.
Justification: Would be a huge cost and would need ongoing committment of resources and funding.
Other notes: The city already funds Seattle Preschool Program (SPP) which has subsidized childcare for children 3-5 years old. DEEL also has a Child Care Assistance subsidy program for low-income families who make 60-94% SMI, for kids infant age to 12. "Affordable childcare" proposal would need to understand if this is free/reduced cost for all, or if the subsized rates change, or include more famlies. Big concerns about one-time nature of PB funds and the ongoing need for affordable childcare.
