8th Avenue NW Holman Road Underpass Project
Help improve pedestrian and traffic safety on 8th Avenue NW, a major thoroughfare beneath the Holman Road Underpass. With minor investment, lighting, power washing, and painting would greatly improve connectivity, safety, and reduce conflicts between pedestrians, bicyclists, buses, and drivers on 8th Ave., NW. Severely damaged by a recent fire, these improvements would inspire confidence in pedestrians and make 8th Avenue walkable 12 months of the year.

Children walking to school bus stops, elderly and disabled folks going from their nursing home to nearby businesses, parents with small children, people coming home after dark from nearby Metro stops, early-morning dog walkers, bicyclists - all these neighbors and more need to feel safe traveling through this space. The current lighting is so deteriorated as to not be noticeable, and the dark alcoves often harbor garbage including hazardous waste. After recent problems with criminal activity in the area, neighbors are nervous about walking through such a dark and dingy tunnel of a space. The underpass needs to be power washed to remove the remnants of human waste, debris, and the smoke damage left by the June fire, and brightened with upgraded lighting and reflective paint. Holman underpass is a vibrant connector of the community, not a cave. Let's make it safe and welcoming for the pedestrians and folk on wheels who rely on it for safe passage every day.
