Award Land Back to Native People
I think that there are ways that giving Land back or purchasing land and returning it to Indigenous lands for usage for economics, food growth, housing, healing services could benefit the whole community.
This proposal has been accepted because:
Type of funding: Infrastructure (capital)
Rough cost estimate: Over $7.2 million
Evaluation notes:
✅ This idea could be implemented without changing current policy or law.
✅ This idea is within the City's jurisdiction.
✅ This idea doesn't name a specific vendor.
✅ This idea would not incur costs indefinitely.
Justification: This would likely require an additional RFP process to determine which organization(s) received the land.
Other notes: OPCD has multiple planning efforts that could be leveraged to identify land parcels for purchase. This would require developing a process for land aquisition that could mirror exisitng EDI practices. Race-based decision-making could run afoul of State and US anti-discrimination laws.
Thank you for sharing your idea. This idea and its evaluation have been forwarded to the budget delegates. They will use this information to group together similar ideas, narrow down options based on community needs, and develop fully detailed proposals for you and your community to vote on in October 2023.
